ST IVES PREPARATORY SCHOOL
Sydney Grammar School
St Ives NSW
Completed in 2023
A three-level educational facility for Years 1 and 2 students, Sydney Grammar St. Ives Preparatory School. It’s the first stage of a Masterplan where single storey buildings are progressively replaced.
The architecture integrates with its surroundings and sits comfortably overlooking the oval, linking adjoining buildings, extending covered circulation routes and providing open, communal space.
A collaborative partnership between school and architects ensured the building was tailored to suit its growing educational needs, plotting a course for further development.
The architecture is derived from the surrounding buildings, both in form and its material selection. The palette of colours and textures and the specification of both glazed and faced brick references the existing buildings while providing durability and longevity; these form key aspects of project sustainability.
LCA was at the forefront during the design process, specified brickwork meets our environment responsibility in limiting operational carbon.
From the main entry, the building stands atop tiered planter beds. The facade is composed of white glazed bricks arranged in a stack bond with soldier coursing. The finish subtly refracts light, creating a shimmering effect in direct sunlight. The generous two-storey verandah is framed by rendered masonry columns, providing covered circulation and break out space for students.
The composition creates a harmonious interplay of textures, blending strength with grace.
