GLENGARRY CAMPUS MASTERPLAN
The Scots College
Kangaroo Valley NSW
The Boarding Program supports character development through experiential learning facilitated by outdoor education. The Masterplan seeks to revitalise the Glengarry Campus, creating a unified architectural vision reflecting the College’s commitment to holistic education and support the curriculum and outdoor activities.
Composed of a new Operations and Administration Building, a improved Dining Hall and a purpose-built Music Classrooms which open onto an amphitheatre carved into the site following its natural contours. A new Quadrangle provides a central, communal space creating a precinct to enhance connectivity and support interdisciplinary engagement.
The Operations Building is the principal structure and primary point of arrival, designed in response to the site's context, drawing inspiration from early Australian vernacular architecture characterised by long, low buildings with overhanging eaves, verandahs, chimneys, and balustrades.
Sustainability informs material selection: stone from excavation are used to construct columns and chimneys and existing timber from demolition is reused. The design prioritises thermal comfort and energy efficiency through high and low level operable windows and louvres for cross ventilation, a ventilated double roof with an insulating air gap to reduce solar heat gain and in-ground fresh air ductwork naturally cools or warms incoming fresh air, to reduce reliance on mechanical systems. Stormwater management includes bio retention & discharge systems, while the Quadrangle actively harvests, collects & stores rainwater for re-use
