With over 35 years of experience in Architecture, JCA brings extensive skills in addressing complex challenges related to BCA Compliance upgrades.
JCA have extensive experience resolving complex issues around BCA & Fire Services upgrade of existing (including Heritage listed) buildings, working within a team of capable and highly qualified consultants, formulating ingenious strategies to overcome compliance shortfalls in building compartmentation, FRL’s, egress requirements, distances, life safety & building protection.
Fire engineering and the development of Performance Solutions is at the forefront of our strategy to achieve compliance in the most timely, spatially & cost effective manner. The practice works diligently to ensure design teams interact in a collaborative & collegial manner, collectively workshop ideas, being creative & thinking ‘outside the box’ to optimise the outcomes.
It is a multi layered approach which recognises the practical requirements and constraints working within an operational school environment, the need to minimise disruption, to avoid wholesale relocation (of facilities), overlayed with budgetary constraints, conditions of consent & programming complexities.
JCA has delivered a wide range of refurbishment projects, upgrading the fire safety system and bringing the architecture to comply with the Building Code of Australia (BCA). Key works include the fire safety upgrade at St Catherine’s Boarding House, which focused on bringing the entire facility in line with current regulatory standards. At The Scots College (TSC), we delivered a comprehensive upgrade to the heritage-listed Aspinall House boarding facility, enhancing student amenities and upgrading both wet and dry fire systems to better support a safe and comfortable living environment. JCA also managed the refurbishment of the TSC Harry Triguboff Auditorium located within the Main School Building, a heritage-listed structure over 100 years old. The project not only upgraded the fire safety system but also increased seating capacity, acoustic and audiovisual capabilities.
Our experience also include significant projects involving a formal change of use, where existing facilities are repurposed to meet evolving educational needs. Notably, we led the transformation of the Sydney Grammar Gladesville Boatshed and the TSC Boatshed to enable overnight student accommodation, ensuring compliance with the BCA while enhancing the building’s capacity to support the curriculum. JCA oversaw the development of the TSC Early Years Learning Centre in Rose Bay, converting an existing site to cater specifically to early childhood education, with purpose-built learning and play spaces. Lastly, we managed the conversion of a former health facility into the TSC Brighton Preparatory School, creating a preparatory campus that supports the school’s academic vision while making optimal use of available heritage-listed infrastructure.

MAIN SCHOOL BUILDING
This project exemplifies our dedication to the adaptive reuse strategy, showcasing innovation and sustainability. JCA has been working closely with the Client since 2006 progressively upgrading the heritage-listed building, while addressing the College's evolving needs and ensuring compliance with contemporary standards.
By carrying out facility upgrades and refurbishment, the lifespan of the building is greatly extended, reducing the embodied carbon that would otherwise result from demolition and new construction.
Moreover, future-proofing the facility represents a strategic financial advantage, eliminating the considerable upfront expense associated with constructing an entirely new building.
The ongoing conservation and adaptive reuse of the Main School Building ensures it will continue to serve for and be appreciated by the Scots Community for another century or more.

HARRY TRIGUBOFF AUDITORIUM
In 2022, JCA completed the reconstruction and refurbishment of the Assembly Hall, now known as the Harry Triguboff Auditorium. This complex project required a comprehensive approach, leading the team to consider the entire building in its planning and execution.
A key principle guiding the reconstruction was respect for the building’s cultural significance to the Scots community. Every effort was made to faithfully reproduce the Hall's earlier known state, while working within the constraints of alterations made during the 1975 construction works.
As part of the upgrade, provisions were made to expand the sprinkler and fire/smoke detection systems. This included the installation of a new fire indicator panel (FIP) designed with capacity for future expansion.

TSC BRIGHTON PREPARATORY SCHOOL
Adaptive re-use of a severely compromised heritage-listed building with a long history of varying uses. Strategically, three separate DAs were lodged to enable a timely site start; demolition, a change of use with the main work contract to follow. The project was contracted on a cost-plus basis and completed on time and budget. The local response has been very encouraging as the first independent boys’ preparatory school established in Sydney since 1954.
